Hula Hoop Fitness And Hula Hoop Dance Apps

Learn to Hoop, Richard Loxley, Lt (Fee Based)

About: “Learn to Hoop is an app that will take you from the very basics to a high level of hooping with clear, easy-to-follow instructions with video and text.”

Our Thoughts:  Good for the very, very beginner level. These are very short videos with written instruction and demo.  For those that are written learners, the in depth text descriptions will be helpful. The visuals are easy to follow but you will need to watch the videos and read the written instructions at the same time.  The instructor does not talk while performing the hula hoop dance tutorials.

FXP Fit (Fee Based)

About:  The FXP App has a series of exercises you can combine for upper and lower body exercises as well as cardio sequences.  Many of the sequences are free, with additional premium workouts available for additional costs.

Our Thoughts: The app is free, which is nice.  The downside is that each individual exercise is played as a separate video, so if you’re looking for a complete workout video where you just click play, it’s touch and go as you move from one exercise to the next.  The other concern is that from a personal trainer standpoint, many of the exercises may not adequately stimulate the muscle groups being targeted to produce results.  If you are just starting a workout program this might be an option to give you ideas.  And if you’re bored with your own cardio sequences, you can check out theirs.

Hooplovers (Free)

About:  Learn to hoop dance with Deanne Love using the Hooplovers app.  The creators of now bring you all of their free lessons in this easy to watch and learn app.  Improve your skills and fitness with hundreds of hoop dance tutorials created for total beginners and well beyond.

Our Thoughts:  The app is free, which is great.  Deanne Love’s instructions are easy and fun to follow.  If you have followed her on YouTube, this is a collection of tutorials from YouTube in one location for easy access. Deanne provides a variety of hoop dance tutorials, so you’re sure not to get bored!

Fitness and Nutrition

Our thoughts:  MyFitnessPal is a solid app for tracking.  I recommended this to clients before we even had apps and had clients use their free website to log their food intake.  One word of caution.  If you are relying solely on calories in calories out methodology to achieve weight loss and are NOT seeing results, check out this super helpful infographic from Precision Nutrition on why calorie counting may be throwing off your results.  If it’s working for you however, keep on keeping on!

The Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout (Free)

About: A scientific, personalized fitness experience in 7 minute intervals

Our Thoughts:  Workouts are customizable based on your level of starting fitness, whether it is beginner, intermediate, or advanced.  The app provides visual with audio cues so that you can listen to this as your perform your workout.  This is a good compliment to hooping to provide total body resistance without the need for a gym or equipment.  These are especially good if you are someone that doesn’t like to come up with your own workouts and wants a pre-made workout ready to go.

CharityMiles (Free)

About: Just choose a charity and hit the streets.  As you walk, run or bike, the app will measure your distance and you will help earn money for your charity.

Our Thoughts: For those of you that like to walk while hooping, this is a great choice of hula hooping apps that can not only encourage you to cover more distance, but give back to a great cause while you log miles.

Our Thoughts:  Just like with  MyFitnessPal, this is a solid app for tracking.  AND, we like that it can track daily steps using their in-app step counter with Iphones.  Tracking steps is a great way to get your boost your daily total expenditure rate.  A note of caution again – if you are relying solely on calories in calories out methodology to achieve weight loss and are NOT seeing results, check out this super helpful infographic from Precision Nutrition on why calorie counting may be throwing off your results.   If it’s working for you however, keep on keeping on!

Music Apps

Note:  Yes, we’ve listed music apps.  But we really encourage you to think of these as hula hooping apps, because you can change your movement patterns, hoop dance trick combinations, trick tempos with a change in music genre or beats per minute.  So the music apps below are really hula hooping apps in disguise that force new movement patterns with your hula hoop dance and fitness.

Spotify Music (Free)

About: Spotify is the best way to listen to music on mobile or tablet.  Search for any track, artist or album and listen for free.  Make and share playlists.  Build your biggest, best ever music collection.

Our Thoughts:  It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the same old same old playlists.  Monotony means that your hoop dance patterns can get stuck in a rut as well.    Changing a genre or style of music can change the way your body moves with your hoop, thus creating break throughs and new sequences in your hoop dance. The app is easy to use and you can login using an email address or your Facebook profile. I’ve got Ellie Goulding Delirium rocking out right now on Spotify and I’m trying really hard to not pick up my hoop!

RockMyRun (Free)

About: Save time.  Perform Better.  Have More Fun.  RockMyRun works with the world’s best DJs to craft mixes and playlists that react to your body.  You’ll enjoy every workout more because your music moves with you. Mixes build in beats per minute during your workout to keep you going.  Body Driven Music adjusts music tempo of mixes and playlists to match your steps or goal cadence.

Our Thoughts:  Why are we including a Run Music app for hooping?  Well, you can select by Genre of music (Modern, Dance, Pop, Country, etc) which will take your hoop dance in a new direction. Or you can select from music with predefined beats per minute (BPM) to keep your tempo consistent when practicing a hoop dance routine.  I don’t know about you, but I hate stopping and replaying a song over and over just because it had the tempo I wanted for a hoop dance sequence and I know the next one on my playlist is going to be a slow love song.  Keeping the BPM can save you some time from shuffling and adjusting your music.

Another pretty useful feature is you can connect the BPM to a heart rate monitor so your music can adjust with you.  You can login using your email or Facebook profile so it’s easy to get started right away.

Let us know how you like this one!  130 BPM had me flying all over the living room with non stop movement, which was kind of fun (and dizzy). But it also forced a different tempo for a trick I’ve been working on, which was super interesting to see how that looked and felt when sped up dramatically.

FIT Radio Workout Music (Free)

About: The only fitness app that provides you with non-stop, high energy playlists of all genres designed to motivate your workout.

Our Thoughts:  Fit Radio is very similar to RockMyRun in terms of features and capabilities.  BPM are outlined for each category, and you can select from the various Genres of music.  You can login using your email or Facebook profile so it’s easy to get started right away.

Track Your Hoop Dance Tricks

ToDoist (Free)

Our Thoughts:  When you are learning hoop dance tricks and combinations there are so many tutorials that you are likely to come across and think “I want to come back to that”.  And if you’re like most of us, you might forget what and where it was.  ToDoist can help you keep track of the tricks you want to learn and even combinations or dance sequences that you create.    You can simply copy the URL for the video you want to come back to, and paste right into ToDoist as a task.

About: Wunderlist is a simple-to-use-to-do list app that keeps us on track.  Thanks to its recurring items and notifications, we never miss deadlines or forget to grab milk from the store.  With collaborative lists that stay in sync across iPhone, iPad and Mac, we can keep our baseball games, movie nights, ad team meetings organized.

Our Thoughts: Wunderlist makes it easy to separate your to do lists out by popular categories.  Groceries, work, family, private. I used the private list to record hoop tricks I want to come back to.  You can also share your list, print it or even email it to yourself or others.

Relaxation & Brain-Body Connection

In this category we’ve included apps to help you relax and increase your brain body connection.  Relaxing and calming your mind can help you connect where your mind wants to take your body for a dance trick or combination.  Listed below are both simple relaxation apps and apps that include binaural beats.

What are binaural beats?  “Binaural beats are a series of sounds or tones that are played separately in each ear via headphones. They work by activating various centers in the brain. Which centers are activated, and to what extent, depends upon the exact sequence of tones used.

Different sequences are said to help produce different effects, such as increased mental focus, a recreational non-drug “high,” or even actions like ESP, arthritis relief and weight loss” (Source:

Note:  The apps below are designed to help boost the brain body connection, calm your mind to enhance learning, and even improve sleep quality.  Most people have no trouble with binaural beat therapy. However, there’s at least a theoretical chance of running into trouble if you have epilepsy or an irregular heartbeat (especially if you have a pacemaker). Source:

Relax Melodies (Free)

About: Can’t sleep?  In 20 minutes you will, or less. Introducing the most popular sleep aid app!  Start sleeping now and enjoy full nights of sleep like you haven’t in a long time.  Here’s how it works.  Select sounds and melodies that you like and combine them to create a mix.  Adjust the volume of each sound individually for better results.  Lay back, listen, and enjoy falling asleep.

Our Thoughts:  When you are tired, nothing comes easily.  Getting a good nights sleep is not only important in the weight loss game, but if energy is low, your motivation to try new hoop dance combinations or tackle a fitness workout will be low as well.

Brainwaves – Binaural Beats and Isochronic (Free)

About: The No. 1 Brainwave App in 32 Countries!  Top quality Isochronic Tones and Binaural Beats combined with relaxing ambient music and soothing nature sounds.  Including 90 programs for Relax, Sleep, Meditate, Anxiety, Stress Relief, Positive Mind, Confidence, Memory, Healing, Brain Function and much more!

Our Thoughts:  Ummmmm, sign us up for all of the above.  Who couldn’t use help with those things?  Many people use these while working.  I’ve used these programs while hooping!

Beyond Meditation Binaural Beats (Free)

About: The advanced brainwave meditation audios in this app give you a powerful ten-level progressive program which is beautiful to listen to, ultra-relaxing, blissful and reliably enables your meditations to be deep and a pleasure each time, without fail.

Our Thoughts:  This app does a good job of providing descriptions for the various alpha, theta delta waves and how to use each one.  It also provides various levels so you can progress through a thirty day program for each level.
