What size and weight hoop is right for you? Please realize that we can only give some guidelines to go by as everyone is unique in some way.
People come in different sizes, shapes, ages and have different goals related to their desire to find a hoop. Are you just trying to see if you can still hoop like when you were a kid? Maybe you've heard hooping can burn up to 400 calories and hour and what a good exercise hooping can be. Maybe you've seen someone performing those cool, sexy dance and off body moves that make hooping so exciting and fun. Whatever your goal we can help you determine the right size, weight, and style hoop to meet your needs.
We have divided the information into two main category of hoops, Weighted Exercise Hoops and Dance or Performance hoops. Both categories are great for exercise so we refer to the heavier hoops 1.5 to 2.0 lbs as weighted, and the lighter dance hoops, which vary between 3/4 and 1.5 lbs, as dance hoops. Weighted Exercise hoops are more popular with individuals who want to learn to hoop again, have fun, lose weight and take a few inches off their midsection but are not so interested in learning the tricks, off body, and hand moves that are popular with hoop dancing.
Weighted Exercise Hoop - size & weight: We recommend a hoop that you can comfortably maintain the hooping rotation for a minimum of 10 minutes. For most people this would be a hoop that when you stand the hoop in front of you the top of the hoop circle should reach somewhere just below your belly button and up to the middle of your chest. Canyon Hoops are measured from the floor to the top of the hoop. We have three standard sizes of Weighted Exercise Hoops, a small adult hoop at 38" 1.525 lbs, a mid range 40" hoop approx. 1.75 lbs and a regular adult hoop at 42" diameter approx. 2.0 lbs. We can make any custom size hoop on request. Don't forget that if you plan to hoop in your home you need to make sure you have enough room for the size of hoop you purchase. Replacing a lamp or vase can be a lot more expensive than the cost of the hoop.
If you are 5' 3" or smaller in height and less than 10 pounds overweight the small adult is right for you. Some people also prefer a small diameter hoop to do some of the tricks and dance moves that require the hoop to rotate faster. Remember the smaller the circumference of the hoop the faster you will have to rotate the hoop to keep it up. The advantage of a smaller lighter hoop is that you will get your heart rate up a bit quicker and get a faster aerobic workout for overall health and fitness. The larger heavier hoops rotate more slowly and are easier to learn to maintain the hoop rotation. If you are 20 pounds or more overweight and are average height or taller we recommend a larger hoop. The benefit of a larger hoop is that you can vary the intensity of your hooping from faster to slower. If you are a beginner, or would prefer learning at a slower rate, or are considerably overweight you will do better to start with the larger hoop, so that you can experience immediate success, which will encourage you to continue to work out with the hoop. Still not sure? You can't go wrong with the mid size 40" hoop which is the best of both sizes. Here is a link to the Weighted Exercise Hoop category: details
Many people believe that the more weight you want to lose the heavier the hoop you need to buy. THE WEIGHT OF THE HOOP IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN WEIGHT LOSS!!! Regardless of the type of exercise you are doing you lose weight by using oxygen, getting your heart rate up and burning calories! If the weight of the hoop is sufficient to allow you to maintain the hooping rotation and preferably work up a sweat the hoop is the right size and weight even if it only weighs one pound. Through years of experience we believe our hoops are the ideal size and weight to trim inches off your waist and for overall fitness. In the past we carried hoops that could be weighted to 3 and 4 pounds but we are convinced that the additional weight does not help you lose weight any faster and may even be harmful both due to bruising and potentially other harmful effects due to health problems you may already be dealing with in your life. We also don't recommend hoops with gimmicky waves, magnets, etc., as they almost always will produce bruises and are usually heavier than they need to be. Canyon Hoops have a smooth inner surface to prevent brusing and harmfull effects of hooping.
Dance and Performance Hoops: Canyon Dance and Performance Hoops are ideal for the individual who wants more variety and more challenge in their hooping routine, or intermediate and experienced hoopers. These hoops are designed for faster paced workout, dance, tricks and off body moves that require the hoop to be lighter and rotate at a quicker rate. Dance and Performance Hoops are 32" to 40" in diameter and 3/4 lb to 1.5 lbs and are designed to give a bit more of a challenge to your hooping routine.
We have four main styles of dance hoops available in the dance hoop category. Some of the benefits of the lighter hoops are that they more quickly raise your heart rate and, frankly, do not hurt as much when you smack yourself in the shin or head practicing some of the fun moves involved in hoop dancing. We have added grip tape (gaffer's tape) to our decorative taped hoops at the request of hoop dancers who feel that it is easier to keep the hoop up when hooping against bare skin and also for the many hand moves involved in this type of hooping. Grip tape can be added to any hoop on request. This category also includes our LED, Mini Hoops and these hoops are approriate for children as well..
The Mini's, as they are called, are two small matching hoops to spin over your hands while moving your arms to create beautiful flow movement and patterns. This is a great upper body workout and a perfect compliment to hooping. Don't forget to add the instructional DVD to get yourself off on the right foot. Our LED's are great for nighttime fun. Check out our demo videos and remember they come with a 1 year parts and service warranty, battery and battery charger. Just $70.00 to $90.00!
We don't recommend using charts to select your hoop as they more often than not will fit you with the wrong hoop. If you are still unsure which size is right for you, or have questions about our hoops, please don't hesitate to call and we would be glad to help you choose the right hoop for your body type and experience level.
